Julian, I use XMind, but for for general export purposes to various programs, I think these two would be the best:

Freemind (.mm): A format that allows easy import into other mind mapping software, ensuring compatibility across different tools
OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language): Useful for importing into other mind mapping applications or outlining software

XMind can import or export in the following formats:

XMind Workbook (.xmind)
MindManager files (.mmap)
FreeMind files (.mm)
Text files (.txt)
Microsoft Excel (.xls, .xlsx)
Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)
